First Folio Edition.

The book is in excellent condition bound with pictorial cloth boards, white lettering to spine, contained in a black slipcase, which is also in excellent condition, with one side covered with glossy paper and illustrations.

The book explores how humans have attempted to reproduce nature's colours. Finlay divides her study into chapters on ochre, black, brown, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. She writes, "this is a book full of stories and anecdotes, histories and adventures inspired by the human quest for colour - mostly in art but sometimes in fashion and interior design, music, porcelain and even, in one example, on pillar boxes".
