Published by The Folio Society, London, 1998. Hardcover. The book is in excellent condition with quarter bound in brown buckram to illustrated paper covered boards. There is bright gilt titling to the spine, silk head and tailbands and illustrated endpapers. The unmarked text block is bright, white, tight and square. There is a small corner split to the bottom edge (pictured). This copy has its patterned paper covered robust slipcase, which is in excellent condition. 

 

The book consists of extracts from source documents such as essays, diaries, letters, novels, and other accounts, mostly by Londoners themselves, but also by visitors to London through the centuries. These accounts are introduced by the author, whose text also adds historical context and ties the book together.
